I HAVE JUST TUNED UP MY 1979HONDA CB650Z SOHC FOUR, THE PREVIOUS TWO OWNERS HAD NOT HAD THE CARBS TUNEDSO I HAD SOME ORIGINAL SETTINGS TO LOOK AT BEFORE ANY ADJUSTMENTS WEREMADE. NO, 1 CYLINDER WAS A GOOD MATCH TO THE MASTER NO. 2. BUT NO. 3 &NO. 4 WERE WELL OUT OF SYNCH. IT TOOK ME ABOUT 10 MINS. TO GET EVERYTHINGBALANCED AND NOW THE ENGINE RUNS LIKE A SWISS WATCH. It works superbly. I love it. It is the best vacuum synchtool for novices and the easiest to use. It is accurate and the dampingworks just fine. However, when Igot the CarbTune II home last night, I just couldn't wait! You see,I have asked 3 different dealers if they thought my carbs needed to besynchronized. I would go on to describe the symptoms I have been experiencing (i.e.. poor starting, long warm-up time beforethere is some idle smoothness, lack of linear throttle response and a subtle"hammering" feeling even at 4,000 - 7,000 rpms.) All 3 dealershipsaid that they did not think synchronizing would help since the bike wasso new...1998 with less than 12,000 miles...but, they would be glad tocharge me $48/hour to remove the plastic panels and see what was what andproceed to charge more from there. After I got the plastic body panels off and accessed the carburetors,I hooked up your very well-made CarbTune II and took a look. Therewas approximately 2cm+ of difference between the carbs! I spent sometime adjusting the carbs as you describe in the well-thought out owner'smanual and I got the idle and 3000 rpm synch within 1 or 2 of the gradientson the scale. I re-checked the balance with the air cleaner and K&Nfilter in place and set then idle to factory spec. The idleis smooth on this dual-pin crankshafted 800cc V-twin. A nice littlestaccato effect...like when it was new. I went for a short test driveabout midnight because the motor was warmed to operating temp. Thethrottle response was linear and predictable, again. The slight "hammering"feeling was greatly reduced to "normal" at around 3,000 rpm. Justa real noticeable difference before and after.. Then, this morning, I cold started the PC and she fired up quickly andI was able to turn off the choke much sooner than prior to the CarbTuneII synchronization. She has a smooth idle that does not require adjustingonce she gets to operating temp! Smooth throttle response after onlyminutes of running is impressive.
