Here
is a device that was sent to us and you can decide if you think it's a cheap
copy. The Carbtune we show here is an older model that the other device closely resembles. We have changed lot of design features in the current Carbtune to make it work a little bit better.
In all the photos below the Carbtune parts are on
the left and the parts for the other device are on the right. Look at video comparison of the Carbtune and this other device here
.
As you will see in video, the scale tubes in other device are not crystal clear like the Carbtune. Bit cloudy really. There is also a clear plastic screen in front that is also not crystal clear but does show reflections that make it difficult to see readings in some lights. The grey rods against this dark grey background do not make for easy reading of other device.
We'll explain about the parts and some of the design thinking behind them.
It's actually quite interesting when you see another product so similar
in design but missing vital details so that it doesn't work like it
should. You can click on the photos to get bigger image.
Carbtune is the black device on left. The device on right has an orange plastic moulding wrapped around black case. We had to remove the orange cover and wrap it in clingfilm as it had a bad chemical smell like uncured PVC. When we tested the other device we found when used as directed the readings were uneven and lower than what they should have been. We know exactly why. Copying the look of something does not mean it will work. It's a precision engineering problem. We won't say what it is as it's our research and development. We just worry about people using this other device and getting frustrated and thinking the Carbtune would be the same. There are several reasons why this device would not be like the Carbtune and I'll explain some of them.
Open the device and look at the scale. Carbtune on left as always and does this scale look identical to you, apart from removing the Carbtune name on sides. The size and graduations on our scale are arbitrary, just to match the components yes this other device has same markings
with the same dimensions. Even where we start scale at 8 and end at 40
is arbitrary yet this is the same.
Do the working parts look similar? The length of the rods, the springs, the tubes, the casing,
the dimensions, all the same. The Carbtune shown is an older model (was
this the basis for a copy?) and the newest Carbtune has some differences. You can see the springs on the other device have a washer on top of them. We used to have a washer but we changed design of the brass guide so it no longer needed the washer.
Here you can see the shock absorber in the base to damp out the shock of the rods falling to the base. It's "V" shaped. We stopped making it this shape long ago as the base of the rod could get caught on it if it got a shock in transit. You only know this if you get feedback from users and adjust the product to reduce problems. Anyone who copies has no development of the product.
Here you see the tube rod assemblies. Identical as far as the eye can tell. But not quite identical and that is why this other device does not work properly when used as instructed. Making something look the same does not mean it works the same. We're not going to tell you why exactly because we don't want to give other people the knowledge from our research and development.
We use expensive high clarity plactic in these scale tubes. Crystal clear, high impact and fuel resistance. Other devices' tubes are a bit
cloudy. Difficult to see in photo.
This is the stainless steel shaft. Carbtune on left is polished and has threaded end for fine tuning at assembly. Other device is not well polished and no adjustment. On casual glance it is identical but not quite identical and that is why this other device does not work properly when used as instructed. Making something look the same does not mean it works the same. We're not going to tell you why exactly because we don't want to give other people the knowledge from our research and development.
This is the spout. You can see the Carbtune spout on left has a better finish (more expensive) and a quality O-ring. The part on the right, do you think it looks like a bad copy? As with the brass guide we originally, belt and braces, designed the spout so it could use 2x O-rings if needed. That is why the second half groove is there at the base. It would have butted against the inside of the scale tube in case 1 x O-ring was not enough. This other spout has the same feature but not quite as they don't know why it was there.
This is the brass guide. You can see the Carbtune guide on left has a better finish (more expensive) and a quality O-ring. As with the spout we originally, belt and braces, designed the guide so it could use 2x O-rings if needed. This other brass guide has the same feature but not quite as there is some precision engineering that they missed that you can't see by eye.
Close up on the inside. Carbtune on left as usual. Could it be more similar. You can see the other device has cloudy scale tubes. Things you can't see is that the tubes on the Carbtune clip into the holders in the case. The other device they just sit there so if you do take it apart at any stage and are not careful then all the parts will fall out and get all mixed up.
Instructions for the other device. Basically they are so similar to the Carbtune instructions, whole parts just lifted. Some parts look like they have been translated one way then back into English or bad English.
